This project, led by Trees for Cities, aims to develop and implement a programme of practical environmental improvements focusing on housing estates, schools and other public spaces. Trainees participating in an NVQ training programme in amenity horticulture, are being given the opportunity to develop their skills by working alongside contractors and volunteers from the community to implement the plans.

Led by the Docklands Youth Service, this project is a partnership between local youth agencies who work together to run a programme of activities for young people during the summer months. The programme operates during the school holiday period and targets young people aged between five and 18 years living in Blackwall and Millwall. Activities include a full range of sports, outings, and centre-based work with an emphasis on learning and a final aim of making young people more aware and more interested in remaining in full-time education. The project also provides important outcomes in terms of childcare places, personal and social development and anti-youth crime initiatives, as well as employment for a large number of youth workers.

The Leyton Orient Community Sports Programme offers programmes throughout Millwall and Blackwall aimed at two different age groups. Five to 11 year olds are offered sporting opportunities at school, weekends and during the holidays, followed up by curriculum time projects aimed at improving basic skills, awareness of healthy lifestyles and an appreciation of multi-culturalism. 12 to 18 year olds are offered sports packages linked to the curriculum or an accredited course. The programme is more focused on those pupils excluded or truanting from school and inter-links with tackling drug abuse and those at risk of criminal activity.
